Launch COMP.ACT – European Action on Compensation for Trafficked Persons, to be held on 2 July 2010 in Prague

The project is lead by La Strada International and Anti-Slavery International and aims to improve access to justice and in particular to compensation for trafficked persons. Redress and compensation is crucial in the fight against human trafficking – not only as an instrument of restorative justice and prevention of re-trafficking, but also as recognition of their right for damage suffered as well as for unpaid labour.

The project itself is carried forward by a coalition of COMP.ACT partners in 13 European countries. For the next three years, we will be working with our partners to bring about systematic and practical changes to ensure that those trafficked in Europe receive compensation for their suffering and unpaid labour. All project partners will conduct research on the existing possibilities and the identification of obstacles in systems and procedures that prevent those trafficked from accessing compensation. This European coalition consists of NGOs that offer direct assistance to trafficked people, the legal community, labour unions, migrant rights organisations and academics.
On the international level, the project campaign will attempt to mainstream compensation into the agenda of international bodies and ensure the commitment of international bodies to guarantee the right to compensation for trafficked people.

The international launch of the project will be held at Hotel Yasmin, Politickych veznu 913/12, Prague (www.hotel-yasmin.cz ). The event will be festively closed with a reception and I hope you will also be able to join us.

Negative Impacts of the “Duty to Report” regarding potency to combat human trafficking

A new Czech criminal code came into force on 1 January 2010. The new law implies that the police
must be informed immediately if a person is identified as trafficked. This legislation does not respect the right to a reflection period and it is in discordance with the Council Directive on residence permit (2004/81/EC) and also with the Czech Ministry of Interior Programme of Prevention and Support to the Victims of Trafficking. Moreover, it is doubtful if the notification duty will be a potent tool in the combat against human trafficking.
